Your View: Sealing the Deal in Copenhagen, Palm Oil, and a Student Stabbing

Online comments: Yudhoyono Urges Climate Delegates to ‘Seal the Deal’
I truly do hope that SBY carries through on his words and, for the sake of Indonesia, does not ponder too long. Already Jakarta is one of the most polluted cities on earth. the most polluted river in the whole world is the Citarum in Bandung, the floods are getting worse by the year partly because of local pollution and inadequate drainage, and one hears of landslides and other preventable disasters on an almost daily basis. Even Bali, one of the world’s premier tourist destinations, has tons of garbage polluting its beaches.

Indonesia stands on the edge, I hope that it can start to set an immediate example that goes beyond words, for its own sake.

Indonesia Defends Palm Plantations

The palm oil industry is guilty of the most heinous ecological atrocities imaginable, including the systematic genocide of orangutans. The forests of Borneo and Sumatra are the only place where these gentle, intelligent creatures live, and the cultivation of palm oil has directly led to the brutal deaths of thousands of individuals as the industry has expanded into previously undisturbed areas of rainforest. When the forest is cleared, adult orangutans are typically shot on sight. These peaceful, sentient beings are beaten, burned, mutilated, tortured and often eaten. Babies are torn off their dying mothers so they can be sold on the black market as illegal pets to wealthy families who see them as status symbols of their own power and prestige. This has been documented time and again.

To pretend the palm oil industry is sustainable is laughable. Even the World Bank and Unilever know otherwise.

High School Student Stabbed To Death In Jakarta Mob Attack

Indonesians experience on a daily basis the reality that law and order in this culture is observed more by chance and good will than because of virtue. Politicians, businessmen, corrupt judges, officers of the law and military personnel commit illegal acts with impunity. Given the example set by these symbolic leaders, is it no wonder that children also act as if their actions are above the law?
